My story- an interview with David Batstone at the Tällburg Forum 2013
An Interview with David Batstone at the TÃllberg Forum 2013. Perf. David Batstone. YouTube. Tällberg Foundation, 1 Oct. 2013. Web. 07 June 2015. <https://youtu.be/rQP2buB-s4Y>.
David Batstone is the co-founder for the, "Not for Sale" organization to stop human trafficking. In this film, David Batstone makes the argument that anyone can take down human trafficking, all you have to do is take it one step at a time. For example, when he was traveling, he promised a woman in Thailand that he would build her a house for the human traffic survivors that she rescued. He kept travelling and doing things like this and when he looked back at all his work, he realized he helped a lot of people, and found hope in ending human trafficking. The point of this was to get people aware that you can make a difference and that human trafficking is a bigger problem than what you think, because it could be happening right under your nose. He talks how people will give stats on the amount of people sold into trafficking and how much money is being made out of it, but then goes on talking how those people won't do anything for the cause, just speak how bad the issue is getting. The only way to stop human trafficking is to open your eyes and realize that it is a big problem globally and then take action by helping people that have been effected by human trafficking.
After watching this short video I do believe that it is a useful source in my research. I think that it is useful because it gives me a first hand account of a person that traveled around the world helping people that have been involved in human trafficking. It is different then my other source because it is a whole different point of view. My other source was a government organization, that was trying to partner with others to stop organized crime such as human trafficking. But this video just shows a regular man, and how he can travel the world and make a difference by himself, and eventually found some people that felt the same way as him and helped him through his journey. I think this information is reliable because it's a memory of what this man went through, and I'm quite sure that he wouldn't make something like that up because he is very involved in the problem. This video was somewhat biased because he thought that people that weren't physically helping weren't really helping the issue, but donations and just making people aware is a good start to stop human trafficking too. The goal of this was to get people involved in their world and stop a major problem like human trafficking.
This source was very helpful to me in many ways. For example, it helped shape my argument by showing that human trafficking does not just go on in poor countries, it is everywhere. In San Francisco, David Batstone found out that one of his local restaurants was a center for a human trafficking ring. This goes to show how discrete human trafficking is, and how it's a bigger problem than what we think. This video can be used in my research project because it shows the first hand experience of a man trying to stop human trafficking by helping one person at a time. After watching this my idea of the topic has entirely changed because he tells you by experience that it doesn't take a large organization like the INL/C/CP to take down human trafficking, just enough individuals that take part to make a difference.
