Barbara Amaya's Story
"Survival Stories." Richmond Justice Initiative. N.p., 27 July 2012. Web. 08 June 2015. <http://richmondjusticeinitiative.com/human-trafficking/survival-stories/>.
Barbara is an unfortunately common situation. In her early childhood, she was a very normal child doing things normal children like to do. She enjoyed reading, and was a part of the barbie fan club. Then, the abuse started. This changed her life permanently, and she became depressed. The neglect she had been shown led Barbara to run away at the age of 12. At the time, she didn't know but by running away, she made herself a prime target for human traffickers. She was taken in by what seemed to be a couple just looking to help a young girl in need but Barbara was soon after introduced into the world of trafficking. This couple used her for a period of time, and then sold her to another trafficker who ended up stealing her freedom in New York for 8 years. In addition to being trafficked for such a long time, Barbara became addicted to drugs which was both harmful to her body, and cost her a large amount of money. Thankfully, Barbara recovered due to help from her family and a methadone clinic. Barbara's story is meant to show people what it is actually like to be trafficked, why it needs stopping, and the red flags when it comes to human trafficking.
When looking at my goals, this source becomes very useful to me because it gives a unique story telling about the horrible life of a trafficked human. Barbara's also offers specific details about the journey of a person that was trafficked along with the important warning signs that come with human trafficking. Furthermore, she adds details about how her daughter had a similar experience to herself, but then how Barbara ensured the safety of her daughter by learning from her mistakes. This is important because it shows other parents how they may be able to prevent terrible things from happening. This source is reliable because it is a first person account, the facts cannot be disputed. In addition, there is no bias when looking at this source because it is a narrative. The goal of Barbara's story is to educate people about her mistakes, and how to avoid the traumatizing experience she went through.
Barbara's story becomes very useful in my research when considering the uniqueness that a first person hand experience offers. This has a clear spot in my research because of the different elements of human trafficking, such as the red flags, that are shown by Barbara's story. This was very helpful to my research because it showed me the specific atrocities that human trafficking causes. No human should have their freedom taken away like Barbara did, and that's why it's important for us to fight this issue. This has changed how I look at my topic in the sense that Barbara’s story is a true eye opener to those who read her experience. By observing her specific human trafficking experience, it allows viewers to see why there is a desperate need for an end to human trafficking.
